Brewing with a Bialetti coffee machine or a Moka Pot

Bialetti Moka Pot brewing guide

How to Brew the Perfect Moka Pot Coffee

The Moka Pot — made famous by Bialetti — is one of the most iconic ways to brew rich, bold espresso-style coffee at home. With the right technique, it produces a full-bodied cup with deep flavour and beautiful crema. Follow our guide below to get the best out of your Moka Pot every time.

Brew Specs at a Glance

☕ Makes 2 strong cups
⚖️ Coffee Amount 20g / 0.7 oz (for a 2-cup pot)
💧 Water Amount 100ml / 3.4 fl oz
📊 Brew Ratio 1:5 coffee to water
🌡️ Water Temp Off the boil (90–95°C / 194–203°F)
🔩 Grind Size Fine — finer than filter, coarser than espresso

Best roast for Moka Pot: We recommend an Espresso Roast — its deeper, chocolatey notes shine through the Moka Pot's pressurised brew method. A medium-dark roast also works beautifully.

Step-by-Step Brewing Instructions

  1. Preheat your water. Use hot (not boiling) water to fill the bottom chamber up to just below the safety valve. Starting with hot water reduces the time the coffee spends on heat, preventing a bitter, burnt taste.
  2. Grind your coffee. Grind fresh to a fine consistency — similar to table salt. Avoid grinding too fine (like espresso) as this can clog the filter and create too much pressure.
  3. Fill the filter basket. Add your ground coffee to the metal filter basket, filling it level to the top. Do not tamp — just give it a gentle shake to level the grounds.
  4. Assemble the pot. Screw the top and bottom chambers together firmly. Be careful as the bottom chamber contains hot water.
  5. Heat on low-medium. Place on the stove over a low to medium heat. Keep the lid open so you can watch the brew.
  6. Listen and watch. After a few minutes, coffee will begin to flow into the upper chamber with a gentle gurgling sound. Once the flow turns from dark brown to a pale blonde colour — remove from heat immediately.
  7. Stop the extraction. Run the bottom of the pot under cold water to halt the brewing process and lock in the flavour.
  8. Serve immediately. Pour and enjoy. A Moka Pot brew is strong and concentrated — perfect on its own or as the base for a milk drink.

Tips for the Best Results

  • 🧊 Always start with hot water — cold water forces the coffee to heat slowly on the stove, often resulting in a bitter, scorched taste.
  • 🔥 Use low heat — patience is key. High heat rushes the process and burns the coffee.
  • Don't tamp the grounds — unlike espresso, tamping can create too much resistance and over-pressurize the pot.
  • 🫙 Buy whole beans and grind fresh — pre-ground coffee goes stale quickly. Grinding fresh makes a noticeable difference to flavour.
  • 🚿 Clean your pot after every use — rinse with warm water only. Soap can leave a residue that affects flavour and damages the pot's seasoning over time.
  • 🔩 Replace the rubber gasket annually — a worn gasket causes leaks and affects pressure. Bialetti replacement parts are easy to find.
